A surprising country

 

Although it has been a member of the European Union since 2007, Romania is still one of the relatively unknown countries in Eastern Europe. Long hidden behind the ‘Iron Curtain’ (1945-1989), its heritage emerged scarred and marked by communism.

For those of you interested in architecture and history, our towns and cities will surely fascinate you. Most of them have three distinct facades: an old one (with mostly unrestored heritage buildings, but also some which have been done up), a communist one (with predominantly grey colours and rectangular shapes) and a new one (mostly handsome and comfortable villas, sometimes too flamboyant) all co-existing in a strange harmony. And sometimes,amongst them, newly built surprising `palaces`, with incredible towers and decorated roofs shining in the sun ... Rroma houses. Go outside the cities, and you will discover hidden architectural gems in Transylvania, freshly uncovered frescoes, medieval castles, fortresses and World Heritage Sites, surrounded by unspoilt nature.

If you’re into adventure and the outdoors Romania is the place to go, ideal for horse riding, trekking and cycling. Off-road driving is gaining more and more popularity (4WD, ATV and bikes, especially inthe southern mountains), and so are caving, rock-climbing, paragliding and white-water rafting. Golfing was slow to take-off, but now is picking up speed. Aquatic sports are trendy on the Black Sea coast, and there has even been one race of the UIM WPPA Class 1 World Powerboat Championship hosted here.

Food lovers won’t be disappointed either! Romania is known for its wines, and the food will offer you many surprises, mixing Hungarian, Russian and Oriental flavours into its own, distinct
